RESERVE OFFICER
Update: the City of Sumner is
currently not accepting applications for Reserve Officers.

The Reserve Program was
established by the City of Sumner to develop highly trained
officers who can provide additional resources for the Sumner
Police Department. Reserve Officers can provide law
enforcement services under both normal and emergency
conditions.
Reserve Officers are appointed
by the Chief of Police and serve under her supervision and
direction. Officers have the same authority, liability
coverage, and protection as a regularly commissioned member
while acting under the authority of the Sumner Police
Department in a duty status.
Qualifications
The minimum requirements include
the following:

Minimum 21 years old

High School Graduate or GED
-
United States citizen
-
Valid Washington State
Driver's License
-
Pass written oral and
written exam
-
Proficient at reading and
writing English
-
Background check (may
include polygraph examination and psychological
evaluation)
-
Meet departmental physical
fitness standards, which may include an examination by a
department-approved physician.

Read and signed Sumner
Police Reserve Agreement
Appointment to a Reserve
position will be made by the Chief of Police from a
recommended hiring panel.
Civil Service, Industrial
Insurance
Reserve Officers will not be
afforded any protection, privileges or benefits under Sumner
Civil Service rules, or by any collective bargaining
agreement entered into by the City with its full time
employees. Reserve Officers shall, however, be covered by
State Industrial Insurance Under the same classification
Reserve Officer testing is on a
semi annual basis or as is needed and includes:

Written and Physical Agility
test

Oral Board Examination
-
Background Investigation
-
Administrative interview
-
Polygraph and Psychological
evaluation

Interview with Chief of
Police
Following Employment:
-
Reserve Academy (Can be
acquired prior to employment through local community
colleges).

Equivalent 12 Week Field
Training Program.

Performance standard same as
Full time officers while on Duty.
